Policarpo sent three of his
trusted soldiers to travel to Vicuna and crush this silly rebellion. Surely
only a small show of force would be needed. Three men arrived on the island,
but only one left. There's no description of how it happened, but one
soldier was killed in a skirmish, one soldier decided that the Vicunan
cause was valiant, brave, and heroic, and joined them. The third fled.
After the incident with the
three soldiers, the Vicunans realized that Policarpo would pursue the
island. They would indeed have to defend their new nation. Showing a sort
of doomsday mentality, Renaldo Ormin married Isabel Toro, Policarpo's
illegitimate daughter. Policarpo also realized something: a much larger
show of force would be needed. He wouldn't need to actually engage the
islanders - they couldn't be that stupid. He would never need to use force
against the tiny island that included his brother and daughter.
