Renaldo Ormin was one of the most critical players in the Vicuna story. Not much is known about Renaldo, and most of what is known is unreliable. He was born sometime around 1920 into a family of native Vicunans. He worked as a farmer for most of his short life. It is certain that it was Renaldo who galvanized the people of Vicuna and convinced them to declare la Isla Vicuna an independent nation. After Gen. Policarpo Toro sent his first soldiers to quell the rebellion, Renaldo married Isabel Toro, Policarpo's illegitimate daughter. There are no eyewitnesses to his death, but it is generally accepted that he died in the fighting on December 14, 1941.
