"This was written by the people of la Isla Vicuna on December 10.

The Statement of Seccession

We the people of la Isla Vicuna have decided to secede from Chile and form a new nation. The [people] of Vicuna can no longer bear the injustice and tyranny [of the] Chilean police. We will not permit . . . Chile or its representatives to control the fate of [our] island. . . permit our island . . . for coal. No . . . our lives for the hunger . . . the coal. . . We will address all . . . not permit Chile . . . island any longer."
