“A bold idea that the American [founder] had during his music studies at Oxford. At that time he often visited his aunt, who lived as [a sister] at the monastery in Jouques, and experienced an atmosphere that all the theory at university could not convey: the mysteriously archaic, quiet and remote world of Gregorian chant. Today he wants to get the chant out of its sacred seclusion and bring it to everyone, so that they too can get to know the ‘basis of the western musical tradition’.”Read more. 13 May 2020

3 July 2020

“Locked up in a hut on the moor, I decide, with Neumz in the palm of my hand, to virtually float around under the vaults of the abbey of Notre-Dame de Fidélité. Now that I am in control, I choose the office of Benedict of Nursia (480-547), whose rules – the so-called Regula monachorum – have long governed the thinking and actions of nuns in Jouques. Ora et labora is Saint Benedict’s motto. According to him, you should sing the praises of God seven times a day and work, meditate and pray in between. For me, the work was the writing of this article, the singing was done by the nuns, the meditation went by itself, only the praying was a bit more difficult. Anyway, let the day begin now.”Read more.
6 May 2020

“The Gregorian chants originated in the 8th century and spread throughout Europe. It accords to St Benedict’s ‘rule’, in which the day is divided into balanced divisions of manual and intellectual work, prayer and rest, starting at 5 a.m. with the chanting of matins, and concluding with compline at 8 p.m., followed by the ‘great silence’ of night.”Read more. 21 April 2020

“”Christ is risen! Alleluia! There are no words adequate to this great joy. So, instead, here is an image of the Risen Christ meeting the women who came to anoint his dead body, and the nuns of Jouques singing the introit to the Day Mass of Easter, Resurrexi. The late D. Hildelith Cumming used to describe this chant as being like a ping-pong sitting on a fountain of water, serene not shouty, as the deepest joy always is. A blessed Easter to you all!”Read more. 12 April 2021

“One of the problems with recordings of Gregorian Chant is that they tend to be old and poor quality, or they tend to be produced for mere performance and album sales and lack the true spirit of Chant. “On my CDs only men sing Gregorian chants and prayers and somehow I am not surprised: Because the (Catholic) Church has always had a hard time with women: “Mulier taceat in ecclesia” – that is, ” Let the woman be silent in the congregation” – as is well known in the letter to the Corinthians (1. Cor. 14, 34) . This means the exclusion of women from church teaching and priesthood, but women are also left out in other areas, for example church music.”Read more. 8 February 2021
