Week 13

April 26 / 28

Are there other design methodologies I should be considering?

You betcha

We discussed the difference between Methods and Methodology.

Thus far everything we've done has been rooted in a user-centered, iterative design process. But there are other frameworks or methodologies that designers use! You may be interested in how these apply to your work, and you might dive in further or become a religious adherent to one or more.

Human-centered Design vs User-centered Design. Design Thinking. Activity-centered Design. Process-Centered Design. Contextual Design. Participatory Design. Universal Design. Transgenerational Design. Service Design. Evidence-based Design. Thanatosensitivity. Metadesign. Lean Design. Agile Design. Generative Design. Machine Learning.

Lots of these start out as marketing for a specific design firm or designer or researcher. That doesn't make them bullshit necessarily!

Assignment

    For Thursday Apr 28:
  • Assigned text (see texts page!). Tiny quiz on Thursday.
For Tuesday May 3 (by 8am as always):
  • Week 13: Redo something! Take a look back at the methods you've attempted so far and want to either improve on, or just do more of because you enjoyed the process.
  • You can explicitly call this out in your notion writeup: "For week 13, I am revisiting the method I attempted in week x because..."
